Frequently asked questions

Is WebPTools really free?
Yes — 100% free with no limits, no sign-up and no watermarks. Convert as many images as you like, as often as you like.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The entire conversion runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. Your files never leave your device, which makes it perfectly safe for private or client photos.
Which image formats are supported?
You can convert JPG, PNG, GIF, BMP and WebP images to WebP, JPG or PNG. Animated GIFs are converted using their first frame.
How much smaller are WebP files?
Google's studies show that lossy WebP images are 25–34% smaller than comparable JPEG files, and lossless WebP is about 26% smaller than PNG. The exact savings depend on your quality setting and the image content.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes — the tool works in modern browsers on Android, iOS, Windows and macOS. On older Safari versions, use the JPG or PNG output instead of WebP.
Why did my converted file get bigger?
Very small or already-optimized images can occasionally grow after conversion. Try lowering the quality slider — you will usually save far more file size than you lose in visual quality.

JPG to WebP Converter

Turn your JPG photos into lightweight WebP files and cut their size by 25–35% with no visible quality loss. Free, unlimited and private — everything happens right here in your browser.

How to convert JPG to WebP

1

Add your JPG files

Drag & drop, browse or paste — multiple files are welcome.

2

Pick the quality

80 is a great default for photos; lower it for even smaller files.

3

Convert

Click the convert button — files are processed on your device in seconds.

4

Download

Save files individually or all at once as a ZIP archive.

Why convert JPG to WebP?

JPG has been the default photo format for 30 years — but it was never designed for today's web. Converting your JPG photos to WebP typically cuts 25–35% of the file size with no visible difference, and much more if you accept a small quality trade-off.

Smaller images make pages load faster, and page speed is a confirmed Google ranking factor. Whether you run a blog, a shop or a portfolio — lighter images mean happier visitors and better SEO.

  • WebP is supported by ~97% of browsers in use, including Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox.
  • Batch-convert dozens of photos at once and download a single ZIP.
  • Files never leave your device — nothing is uploaded anywhere.

PNG to WebP Converter

PNG is perfect for logos, screenshots and sharp graphics — but the files get heavy. Converting PNG to WebP keeps every pixel of transparency while shrinking files by about 26% losslessly, or far more with the quality slider.

How to convert PNG to WebP

1

Add your PNG files

Drag & drop, browse or paste — batch conversion supported.

2

Pick the quality

High values keep lossless-like quality; lower values compress more.

3

Convert

Click the convert button — transparency is preserved automatically.

4

Download

Save files individually or all at once as a ZIP archive.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

PNG's lossless quality comes at a price: file sizes grow quickly, especially for screenshots and detailed graphics. WebP's lossless mode typically produces files about 26% smaller — and if you can accept a small, usually invisible quality trade-off, the savings grow dramatically.

Transparency (the alpha channel) is fully preserved, making WebP a drop-in replacement for PNG logos, icons and UI graphics on any modern website.

Home / Tools / WebP to JPG

WebP to JPG Converter

Need maximum compatibility? Convert WebP images to universally supported JPG files in one click — perfect for older software, email attachments, printing or any app that doesn't accept WebP.

How to convert WebP to JPG

1

Add your WebP files

Drag & drop, browse or paste — multiple files welcome.

2

Pick the quality

85–95 keeps JPG files crisp; lower values shrink them further.

3

Convert

Click the convert button — processing happens on your device.

4

Download

Save files individually or all at once as a ZIP archive.

Why convert WebP to JPG?

Even though WebP is now supported by ~97% of browsers, some desktop applications, older devices and workflows still expect JPG. This converter gives you a universal file that opens absolutely everywhere.

Note: JPG does not support transparency — transparent areas in your WebP will be filled with white during conversion.

Home / Tools / WebP to PNG

WebP to PNG Converter

Convert WebP to lossless PNG when you need to edit the image later, or when pixel-perfect quality and full transparency are required for design work or printing.

How to convert WebP to PNG

1

Add your WebP files

Drag & drop, browse or paste — batch conversion supported.

2

Optional: resize

Set maximum dimensions if you want smaller output.

3

Convert

Click the convert button — PNG is always lossless.

4

Download

Save files individually or all at once as a ZIP archive.

Why convert WebP to PNG?

PNG is the safest format for editing: every design tool supports it and it is lossless — no matter how many times you re-save. If a client or designer asks for a lossless master file, converting your WebP to PNG takes seconds.

Transparency is preserved perfectly, so logos and graphics keep their transparent backgrounds.

Home / Tools / Image Compressor

Image Compressor

Shrink image file sizes without changing the format. Perfect for speeding up your website, saving storage or fitting files under upload limits — privately, right in your browser.

How to compress images

1

Add your images

Any mix of JPG, PNG and WebP files — drag, browse or paste.

2

Choose quality

Try 75–80 first; lower values mean smaller files.

3

Optional: resize

Set maximum dimensions to shrink images even further.

4

Compress & download

Originals stay untouched on your device.

Why compress your images?

Large images are the #1 reason web pages load slowly. Compressing them improves Core Web Vitals, user experience and search rankings — and unlike resizing, compression keeps your dimensions exactly as they are.

Each image is recompressed in its original format, so a JPG stays JPG and a PNG stays PNG (GIF and BMP files fall back to WebP for better compression).

Home / Tools / Image Resizer

Image Resizer

Resize JPG, PNG and WebP images right in your browser. Set a maximum width or height and proportions are locked automatically — no uploads, no quality games.

How to resize images

1

Add your images

Any mix of JPG, PNG and WebP files.

2

Set max dimensions

E.g. 1920px for full-width photos, 800px for blog images.

3

Optional: quality

Adjust quality to shrink files even more.

4

Resize & download

The original format is kept — proportions never stretch.

Why resize your images?

Need images at consistent sizes for a blog, shop or social media? Instead of a heavyweight editor, just cap the maximum width or height — the tool calculates the other side automatically so nothing gets stretched.

Resizing also reduces file size: fewer pixels means less data, which means faster pages.

How WebP Conversion Works

A complete guide to converting images to WebP — how it works, which settings to pick, and why it makes your website faster.

The conversion process

WebPTools converts images in four simple steps — all of them happen locally on your device:

  • Add your images — drag & drop, browse or paste (Ctrl + V). Your files are read straight from disk and displayed as thumbnails.
  • Choose your settings — pick the output format, adjust the quality slider and optionally set maximum dimensions.
  • Convert — your browser draws each image onto an HTML5 Canvas and re-encodes it in the target format using its built-in image encoder.
  • Download — save images one by one, or grab everything at once as a ZIP archive.

What is WebP?

WebP is a modern image format developed by Google in 2010. It uses smarter compression techniques than JPG and PNG, producing files that are:

  • 25–34% smaller than comparable JPGs in lossy mode
  • about 26% smaller than PNG in lossless mode
  • fully supportive of transparency (alpha channel), like PNG
  • capable of animation, like GIF

Today roughly 97% of browsers in use support WebP — including Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari 14+. For the small remaining audience, websites typically serve a JPG fallback using the HTML <picture> tag (snippet below).

Recommended quality settings

The quality slider trades file size for visual quality. These starting points work well for most websites:

Content typeSuggested qualityTypical saving
Photos and hero images75–8530–50%
Blog and article images8030–45%
Product photos80–8525–40%
Screenshots and UI graphics80–9040–60%

JPG vs PNG vs WebP

FormatBest forTransparencyTypical size
JPGPhotos, gradientsNoBaseline
PNGSharp graphics, text, screenshotsYesLarge
WebPBoth — photos and graphicsYes25–35% smaller than JPG

For web developers: serve WebP with a fallback

If you run a website, upload both versions and let the browser pick WebP automatically:

<picture>
  <source srcset="hero.webp" type="image/webp">
  <img src="hero.jpg" alt="Describe the image" width="800" height="600">
</picture>

A privacy bonus: metadata is stripped

Every time an image is re-encoded, EXIF metadata — including camera details and GPS location — is removed automatically. The files you download from WebPTools contain clean pixel data only, which is perfect for publishing images online.

Top 10 WebP questions from around the world

The most-searched questions about the WebP format — answered simply.

What is a WebP file?
A WebP file is an image saved in Google's WebP format, launched in 2010. It uses modern compression to make images 25–34% smaller than JPG while also supporting transparency and animation.
Is WebP better than JPG?
For websites, yes — WebP produces noticeably smaller files at the same visual quality. JPG still wins for maximum compatibility with very old software and printers.
Does WebP support transparency like PNG?
Yes. WebP has a full alpha channel just like PNG, so logos and graphics keep their transparent backgrounds perfectly.
Can WebP files be animated like GIF?
Yes — animated WebP replaces GIF with much smaller files. Note: converting an animated GIF with this tool keeps only the first frame.
How do I open a WebP file on Windows or Mac?
Any modern browser opens WebP — just double-click the file. On Windows 10/11 the Photos app supports it, and on Mac it opens directly in Preview.
How do I convert WebP to JPG or PNG?
Use our free WebP to JPG or WebP to PNG tools — drag the file in, click convert, download. Everything happens privately in your browser.
Does WebP work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. iOS 14+ (Safari) and all modern Android browsers display WebP images natively — that covers well over 95% of mobile devices in use.
Is WebP lossy or lossless?
Both. WebP offers lossy mode (much smaller, tiny quality trade-off) and lossless mode (pixel-perfect, still about 26% smaller than PNG).
Why is my WebP file not smaller than the original?
Images that are already optimized, very small in size, or converted at very high quality can stay the same size. Try lowering the quality slider to 70–80.
Will WebP replace JPG? What about AVIF?
WebP is already the standard image format of the web with ~97% browser support. AVIF is a newer format with similar goals but slightly lower support — for now, WebP is the safest choice for any website.

About WebPTools

Free, private, browser-based image tools — built on a simple idea: converting an image should never require uploading it to someone else's server.

Our mission

Most online converters ask you to upload private photos, screenshots and client work to unknown servers. WebPTools was built to prove there is a better way: modern browsers already contain everything needed to convert and compress images — so your files can stay on your device, always.

How it works

Every conversion runs inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. When you drop an image into the tool, it is decoded in memory, re-encoded in the WebP (or JPG/PNG) format and handed straight back to you as a download. No server ever sees a single pixel.
